Tales of The Protector New Age
Tale 2: Strong Defenses and Good Offenses
June 17th, 2006
After the unveiling of The Protectors headquarters and getting everything up and running, everyone went there separate ways, even Casey left me in the dust… Well, either way it gave me an opportunity to look at the files I found. Even in death, X-Keller seems to find a way to help me out when I need it. Around 11:30 I started looking through the files, hoping that I would start to understand what happened to Casey and finally do something about. As I started looking, I heard a bang on the window. I jumped up and grabbed a dagger I had hidden behind my bed. After a couple of years of being involved in what I’m involved in, every noise is a bad noise and requires some sort of defense. I get to the window and open it, and a shadowy figure jumps out, grabs me, and… kisses me? I open my eyes and Casey is standing in front of the window, and everyone else is behind her.
“What’s with the dagger there Nick?,” Casey asks me.
I look down at me hand and drop the dagger saying “Sorry, when I hear any bang at all, I tend to react a certain way.”
Casey laughs and says, “Well its just me, you love me. And the reason we are all here is because we have a birthday present for you. Rex put the finishing touches on it today, want to see it?”
I look back at the papers on my bed and then back at Casey’s face. her face was beaming with excitement and happiness, I couldn’t say no to her. I followed them to the Protector’s headquarters and Casey put here hands over my eyes and lead me into another room. When she uncovered my eyes, I saw a bike in front of me, a normal-looking bike.
“Thank you everyone, but I already have a bike that my parents gave me a while ago, ” I said to them.
“Oh no you don’t, I destroyed that bike to have parts to make this,” Rex said.
“Wait, you did what?!” I exclaimed.
Rex laughed and then said, “Trust me, you will like this one a lot better. You see, because of the destruction of the Hero’s Alliance and its inventions, we lack a lot of things we need, such as higher-tech weaponry and transportation. Well this bike combines both of those things, let me demonstrate.” He pressed a button in the middle of the handlebars and tiny blast gun popped out the front of the bike.
I couldn’t believe it, Rex wasn’t kidding at all. “That’s not all, the handlebars have built in blades. All you have to do is grab the handlebar and pull it out, that will cause the blades to come out. And one more thing, if you push the pedals backwards while riding, little thrusters will come out of back to give you a little speed boost when needed,” Rex explained to me.
“Wow everyone, thank you. I can tell a lot of work was put into this,” I said
“Well, Rex did most of the work, but the idea belongs to your girlfriend over there,” Rafael said, pointing at Casey.
I walked over to her and kissed her. We were both only 12 years old, but she is the best thing that has ever happened to me. But the surprises didn’t end with my birthday present. Rex was in heaven explaining all of the nerdy things he had done to the base. He had installed high powered shield systems and security protocols that he would fill us all in on later, and he even made a hiding spot for the airship, an underground garage.
“Wow old man, you’ve been really busy,” Donavan said, getting smacked by Cissnei immediately not showing proper respect.
“Yes I have, I’ve even install an Elemental closet. In here we can store all elementals we collect. Oh, and a present for each of you,” Rex says handing us all something. “They’re updated Elemental gloves. They can hold up to three elementals at one time and if you build up even energy you will be able to use all three at the same time, causing some real damage. In order to win, we will need strong defenses and a really good offense, right?”
I saw Casey by the Elemental closet looking at the fire elemental, and I could tell what she was thinking about. I looked up at everyone and say, “Thank you everyone for the present and thank you Rex for all of your hard work, but I’m really tired and I need to go to bed, I still have school to go to after all. Casey, will you walk home with me?”
“Sure,” she says.
We leave the headquarters and head back to my house. Seeing the look on Casey’s face, I knew it was time to talk.
“You are thinking about that day, aren’t you?”, I ask her.
“It’s very rare that I’m not thinking about that day. The part of the day switches though between the moment were my father that I had just met and started to get to know died in my arms and the part when I shot fire out of my mouth and hands,” Casey said with tears starting to form in her eyes. “And on top of all of that, we still don’t know what that fire was and its been so long since it happened, who knows when or where it will happen again and who I will hurt and…” I kiss her to calm her down. “What was that for?,” she asks.
“To calm you down. I understand how frustrating all of this must be. I’ve been in your position before, having these powers that you don’t understand topped with the death of someone very important to you. I’m really sorry all of this has happened to you and I wish it hadn’t. I never wanted to involve you in this but you are now and I promise you as I promised your father on his deathbed that I will protect you from harm and from whatever this is inside of you. I will figure it all out and together we will get to the bottom of it, I promise you Casey,” I said to her.
She hugged me and said, “I believe in you Nick, but how will we figure all of this out? We have no information on what is happening to me and have been looking for something for like 10 months now, and nothing.”
I thought back to the papers still on my bed at home and realized what I was thinking looking at them only. Whatever this thing was, it was Casey’s and she deserved to know what it was all about. So I made a decision.
“Meet me in the library at school after school tomorrow, I have something you need to see, something that may help us,” I said to her.
She looked up at me and looked in my eyes. She was studying me, trying to get any information from me without directly asking for it. Then she said, “Okay, I trust you.” She kissed me on the cheek and walked home. Tomorrow, both Casey and I were going to know the truth, hopefully…
